Pheran

The state of Jammu and Kashmir is in the northern tip of India. It is a war torn and contested state between India and Pakistan. It has the Himalayas in it. The capital of Srinagar is supposed to be beautiful. I have never been to Jammu and Kashmir. This state is famous for house boats. A house boat is a system by which a boat floating in a lake is a house. During winter the kashmiris as the people living in jammu and kashmir are called wear something called a pheran. A pheran is a wool tunic with embroidery at the yoke. Also on the hem and edge of sleeve. They wear it over a salwar kameez. They wear heavy silver jewelry with it. There are many kashmiris in New Delhi. There are lots of kashmiri stores in New Delhi. They sell traditional kashmiri clothing especially pherans. If you walk down a busy shopping area in New Delhi every once in a while you will see a kashmiri store with pherans hung on the store front. They come in many colors. When I got my first job in New Delhi in press trust of India in my office there were women journalists who wore pheran during winter. I liked it so much I also bought one. My pheran was pink.
