Kashmiri Silk Sarees from India

Yesterday in my feed there was a youtube video which showcased the fabrics of India and the designer clothing by top designers of India. The name of the youtube is Sreesdesigndiaries. Watching the video reminded me of the fabric related words my mother had in her conversation. Somehow I ended up thinking of Kashmiri Silk sarees. My mom had several kashmiri silk sarees. They are soft silky sarees with prints all over and the pallu is distinct but similar in that the colors are similar but print is different. The border also has distinct print. There are several varieties of kashmiri silk sarees. One variety is raw silk. It is thicker in texture. There are raw silk in other South Indian silks. But the saree in my mind is kashmiri raw silk sarees. My mom had two. Both were a light colored background. One had small flowers all over it in red and black. The other one had the same color combination but it was squares adjacent to each other. The border was some other pattern and the pallu was some other pattern. My mom made a midi skirt for me with the one which has squares adjacent to each other. I wore it with a white sleeveless top with beadwork embroidery at the yoke. The beads were small and white. Kashmir is a state in the northernmost part of India. Kerala is in the southernmost part. Kashmir is a cold state and Kerala has a warm climate. Kashmir is cold because it is in the Himalayas. The Himalayas has the highest mountain range in India. My mom had kashimiri silk saree. It is silk with prints all over the saree. In kochi there is a Kashmir emporium. Uttar Pradesh has chickan embroidery. Madhya Pradesh has chanderi fabric. Gujarat has bandhini print saree. Everybody knows that kancheepuram belongs to Tamil Nadu. Bengal cotton, and Jamdani sarees belong to West Bengal. Almost all states have their own silk and cotton varieties of sarees. Karnataka has Mysore silk sarees. I think Orissa has pochampally sarees. Assam has sarees full of threadwork. Each region of India has its own distinct fabric print and pattern in sarees. When Sreelatha the youtuber talked about embellishment, zardosi, beadwork and fabric types such as pashmina I remembered the names of different types of sarees that my mother always talked about. That is because you speak what your mind is full of.
