This poem is inspired by an accident. Sylvia Plath accidently cut her thumb while cutting an onion. It is very difficult to read because of the graphic description. This accident causes Plath to go into a reverie of atrocities that have taken place in history. The Indians axing the scalp of a young pilgrim. Soldiers running. She wonders whose side are the running red coats on. Kamikaze is the Japanese person who commits suicide. The Ku Klux clan is referenced. Silence is a mill. The last four lines are:
