The Applicant by Sylvia Plath

The Applicant is an acerbic poem that mocks the superficial system by which human beings are graded on their abilities, qualities or characteristics. The first line is a question. Are you our sort of person? It is a commentary on the system or society that excludes diversity or overachievement. Handicaps and disabilities are the criteria for being included. Going through life without reflecting or reacting is validated in this system. "It is waterproof, shatter proof; proof against fire and bombs through the roof." A mechanical human being conditioned by the system. "It can sew, it can cook. It can talk, talk talk." It is an all in one remedy that offers a panacea for all the ills of life. Looking at marriage as a something to ward off all the ills of life. The Applicant perhaps is the person, the needy person looking to be included and the system that chooses to exclude or include is the prospective groom? I think. This poem is a commentary on a superficial and farcical society.
