Night Dances- A Poem by Sylvia Plath

The Night Dances is the most happy poem in the book Ariel. The first line is about a smile that fell in the grass. To the poetess lamps and planets fall like blessings in her life. Lamps and planets fall like blessings into the life of the poetess. She feels blessed. Lamps and planets fall on her eyes. On her hair.

Night dances. Pure leaps, spirals. Conjures an almost happy supernatural world. A world peopled by fairies or pixies who dance in the night with perfect leaps or pirouettes. Through leaps and spirals they travel. It is a pure spiritual joy. The flesh bears no relation to that joy perhaps.

The grass drenched with dews smells of sleep. Lilies. Lilies. The calla is a type of lilly. The tiger is another type of lilly. There is a spread of petals. The spread of the petals is described as cold and imbued with the ego. In reality petals are soft but the poet's emotions are even more spiritual than the soft fold of the petals? The tiger embellishing itself with spots and a spread of hot petals refers to the bright colors of the tiger lilly flower that may be too cold and showy for the state of being of the poet.

Immediately there is a change into the sky and we are with the comets. They have "a space to cross." Gestures are cold and forgetful. They flake, peel, bleed and lose? their warm human pink light. Inspite of heaven forgetting the poet she still feels blessed because she is given lamps and planets that fall on her eyes and hair and lips.

Coldness, and forgetfulness is described as the black amnesia of heaven.

Maybe the forgetfulness of heaven takes its toll on the poet. The blessings are there but their presence touch and melt nowhere.

If the first page is full of joy of smiles in grass, of grass that smells of sleep of lilies the second page of this poem questions. The poet asks why is she given the lamps and planets.

Comets, planets, lamps, grass, lilies, sleep, blessings, heaven. Words that take you places.
