The Couriers

A courier is a person who takes a message. The poetess is presented with a series of messages. The first message from the snail-- a word on a leaf is not accepted because it does not belong to the poetess. Sylvia Plath tells herself or admonishes herself for not accepting the word of a snail. A series of messages are presented to the poetess. After the word from the snail it is acetic acid in a sealed tin. This time it is not accepted because it is not genuine. Acetic acid has cleansing properties.  The third message is a gold ring with the sun in it. It is not true and will bring grief. The poetess is pessimistic. A leaf is compared to a cauldron and the frost on it talks and crackles. Cauldrons are pots in which witches or druids cook magic potions. The poetess isolates herself on the top of the Alps by rejecting the messages that she received.  Nine Alps could mean nine messages. This results in the shattering of the grey mirror of the sea. The message was love. Love, love, my season is the last line of the poem.
